Electronic water testers are digital alternatives to analog determination methods, such as test strips. For the electronic measurement of the water values such as chlorine, pH value, alkalinity as well as further, the most different options offer themselves.
It is possible to choose whether only one parameter is to be measured or whether several parameters are to be covered at once with a device in a higher price category. Thus, electronic water testers greatly facilitate a weekly control of the water values of each pool owner. In addition, the reading of the parameters is also significantly simplified.
The correct use of an electronic water tester
With some devices, calibration must first be performed, which can be easily initiated by pressing a button. Everything else is then done automatically by the device.
If the device has visible contacts, you need to do nothing more than hold them in the pool water, wait for the measurement and then read the result. So-called photometers have reagents that are filled with pool water.
A tablet is then placed in these reagents and the measuring device takes over the measurement with the help of a built-in light sensor technology. Finally, it is possible to read the result on the display and dose accordingly.
An electronic water tester should be recalibrated at regular intervals. To do this, simply immerse the device in an available reference liquid and then, in the case of manual devices, adjust it by turning a small screw.
However, the small disadvantage of manual calibration is usually compensated by a lower price. Electrodes and batteries are usually replaceable and can be ordered separately in most cases.
Test strips VS digital electronic water testers
Test strips allow a particularly fast measurement. Here, the test strip on which there are small cushions is simply held briefly in the water of the pool. After a few seconds, the cushions change color and can be compared with the fields on the packaging by color matching.
The biggest advantages of electronic water testers are the extremely high measuring accuracy, the possibility to determine many different parameters and the clear output of the respective value on an LCD display.
This eliminates the need to compare the test solution with a color scale, which is sometimes ambiguous and leaves room for interpretation. Otherwise, the procedure is similar to that of a simple test strip.
Test strips are extremely easy to use and are ideal for a quick measurement in between. However, test strips do not come close to the measuring accuracy of an electronic water tester with tablets or an automatic measuring device. A combination of both methods is therefore recommended.
The fixed weekly measurement is carried out with the manual pool test container, in order to add the required amount of care products to the water on the basis of this. In between or for follow-up control, the test strips can be used.
If the water analysis is to be carried out even more professionally, or if other values besides pH and chlorine or bromine or active oxygen are to be tested, an electronic water tester is the right choice.
The most important water parameters
- pH value: For a pool, the ideal pH value is 7.2, but values between 7.0 and 7.4 are also acceptable. The value is often elevated due to the addition of chlorine. However, if a lot of acidic rainwater enters the pool, the value can also decrease.
- Alkalinity: The pH value of the water can be protected against fluctuations thanks to alkalinity, also called TA value. Ideally, this is between 80 – 160mb/l. If the value is lower, the pH can fluctuate greatly. If the TA value is higher, this makes it more difficult to change the pH.
- Chlorine: When chorine tablets or chlorine granules are added to the water, free chlorine is formed. This chlorine subsequently binds urea, for example. This is how combined chlorine is formed. The free and combined chlorine together determine the total chlorine value.
It is advisable to set the free chlorine content of the pool water between 0.3 and 0.6 mg/l. The combined chlorine, on the other hand, should not exceed this value. The combined chlorine, on the other hand, should not be higher than 0.5mg/l. In addition, it should be noted that the chlorine content is influenced by water quality, UV radiation, filter system and the number of bathers.
- Cyanuric acid: To ensure that the chlorine in the pool water does not degrade immediately, it is important to add cyanuric acid as a stabilizer. Thanks to cyanuric acid, it is easier to chlorinate the water evenly. The optimal cyanuric acid value is between 30 and 50 mg/l.
